It makes sense to me that remote working improves company diversity and inclusion culture. At Singular XQ, remote collaboration is a primary tool for activating exceptional and diverse talent.
It also makes sense to me because, personally, my experience of the digital revolution is that it expanded my social and professional network in ways that increased diversity. When Web 2.0 started taking shape, a new category of friends emerged. It technically started during Web 1.0. IRC and listserv email chats allowed me to develop international friendships with people I had never met. And now, even more through Web 2.0, which added more dimensions to those interactions, I have friends, good friends who know my trials and triumphs, some of whom know my kids’ birthdays and remember my birthday, whom I have never physically met.
The same is true now for Linked In. I have colleagues whom I’ve gotten to know strictly through Linked In. Like this week’s episode guest, Jarvis Moore. Jarvis reached out to me several years ago because he was looking to expand his network, and as a freelance designer starting to develop as a UX Designer, he wanted to know more about research.
He struck me as a person I immediately wanted to track and know. First, he is so humble and approaches people with what he doesn’t know rather than what he is an expert in, even though his expertise is evident. I can’t understate how refreshing that is in today’s world, where we are all trying to sell expertise (myself included). Second, I wanted to keep Jarvis in my circle because he is continuously actively improving himself and learning and growing.
Unsurprisingly, it wasn’t long before he became a senior design leader at Linked In, the same platform that allowed us to meet so easily across time zones and experiences.
He was a most delightful guest on Singular XQ as we talked about his passions, including sneakers, design system nerdery, and something we both feel strongly about—the imperative for diversity in UX.
You might notice some new music in this episode. It is brought to you by the marvelous Abby Ahmad. Edited by Brógan Molloy.
